Skateboarding is today a big time sport and pro skateboarding can bring in a lot of money – even in the millions. While the prize money in pro skateboarding is good, the real money lies in sponsorships and in becoming a Tony Hawk type video game character. Okay, so not every one will be an X Games champion but if you have the talent and drive, there is no reason why you should not become part of the top rung of the sport. And even those who do not reach the pinnacle of pro skateboarding will find that top class pro skateboarders make a very good living from the sport.

The starting point in your climb to the top lies in skating as much as you can – to work or school and in fact any and everywhere you can; but play safe and use skateboard parks and other safe places to practice your advanced moves. An injury can cut short your pro skateboarding career so make sure that you always use the right kind of safety gear – you will fall while working on new moves and there is always a chance of serious injury if you are not protected. It’s important to target your technique- search for companies that sponsor skateboarding and read up on what are the specifics they are looking for – each company will want a different image. You will need to send them videos of how good you are and paying for a professional cameraman and video editor will ensure that what you send to sponsors shows off your skills in the right way. One video will never do – keep updating your video records so you can keep sending out new material to sponsors who did not respond earlier.

Use your videos to help you improve – watching yourself with a critical eye will help you spot defects in your technique which, when corrected, will speed up your learning cycle and allow you to become more creative. Be prepared for a long haul – pro skateboarding stardom rarely comes overnight and learn from your rejections by studying those who were successful – this will tell you what the sponsors are looking for. Never let the fun go out of skateboarding – if it becomes a grind you will become stale and flat and that will spell the end of the creativity and innovation that you need to be a top level pro skateboarder. And finally, don’t let success go to your head – pro skateboarders need their popularity and being arrogant is one way to lose it.
